Health, vitality and the amazing properties of Lemon

Remaining healthy usually entails doing a bit of a ‘cleanse’ every so often. We’re often told we need to ‘detox’ or ‘fast’ …anything to help the liver out. Why? Because it’s the largest internal organ of the body and therefore it has a huge impact on the overall health and wellbeing of your body.

The liver performs several important tasks including, storing and filtering blood to remove harmful toxins, ridding the body of dead blood cells, secreting hormones and enzymes and supporting digestion, by converting what we eat into life-sustaining nutrition.

When the liver is malfunctioning, the consequences range from sluggishness to life-threatening illness.

All of these ailments and health conditions come down to toxicities that overwhelm your liver on a regular basis resulting from medications, alcohol and a processed diet lacking quality nutrition.

Simple daily protocols to ensure the ongoing health of your liver includes:

Incorporating more ‘liver cleansing’ foods into your diet such as raw greens, fruit and vegetable juices (make sure that you include powerful living cleansing foods like beets, green vegetables and the most potent of all – Lemons!!).

At night and/or mid-morning drink a lemon tea, by squeezing fresh lemon juice into hot water and add a teaspoon of olive oil or coconut oil.

  • Minimise your intake of fatty animal foods and hydrogenated oils;
  • Reduce alcohol (particularly spirits) and caffeine intake;
  • Eliminate processed and refined flour, grains and sugar;
  • Avoid unnecessary drugs and medications if you can.

All of these steps will ensure that you drastically reduce the burden being placed on your liver on an ongoing basis…

But, I know all of this seems like a bit of hard work and frankly not very enjoyable so I suggest a moderate step to enhance your liver and therefore your health using the liver cleansing superpower that is Lemon!!!

Lemon Cream Pie! I’m not kidding~

The line up of ingredients is quite basic: oats, chia seeds, almond milk, lemon juice and zest, vanilla extract and pomegranate for a final hit!

Pretty much, all you do is shake up all those ingredients in a mason jar and you’re good to go.

INGREDIENTS
Oats:

  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened almond or coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

Toppings:

  • half a Pomegranate or Passionfruit (or neither if preferred)
  • ¼ cup chopped and toasted nuts (Almond or Cashews)
  • Coconut or Cashew whipped cream
  • Lemon zest
  • Toasted Coconut flakes

There is no complicated method…Just place all Oats ingredients in a small bowl and fold them together and let sit overnight. In the morning, share this out into small glassware (makes 2-3 serves).  Whip up the coconut or cashew cream with a hand or electric mixer, then add the Toppings to each servings the in any order you want to make it look great. Who says healthy has to taste bad?
